The first time MP has however clarified that all he is advocating for if for farmers to diversify.

Speaking at the sidelines of the Kass Marathon held in Eldoret town on Sunday, Chepkut said what he meant is that farmers should consider planting other crops like avocados but not completely abandon maize farming which is the country's staple food.

“It is unfortunate that I was misquoted. What I said is that farmers should plant avocados in at least 10 per cent of their farms and not the whole farm and rest remains for maize,” noted Chepkut.

“Let's plant maize as well as any other alternative crop for the country to be food secure,” he added.

The Jubilee-allied MP who was elected on an independent ticket further said that the government should review the maize buying prices from the current Sh2,300 to at least Sh3,200 per 90-kilogram bag so as to enable farmers to make a profit.
