The University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University and Moi University have emerged as the top best-funded universities in the country with UoN taking the lead among the top three with a total annual of Ksh.540 million.

Kenyatta university comes in second with an annual funding of close to ksh.456 million and Moi university at ksh.302 million. This research was conducted by CPS International between May and June 2018. 

On the case for private institutions, CPS International reveals that Strathmore, Mt Kenya, and Aga Khan universities are top beneficiaries of research funding among private universities with annual funding of Ksh.100 million, ksh.87 million, and ksh.75 million respectively.

 According to the report released by Prof. Herman Manyora, the CPS International Director of Research,  the best 10 national universities received ksh.611 million in research funding with most of the finances emanating from domestic businesses, local and foreign Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other donors.  

This report comes at a time when research in fields like health - cancer and its causes, prevention mechanisms- is being granted top priority in many Kenyan universities, including Kenyatta university which is setting up a ksh.69 million regional reference research center. The centre will cater for cancer treatment among other chronic ailments.
