ODM leader Raila Odinga received a major boost on Saturday after over 150 elders from Rift Valley region endorsed him as de facto successor of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Under the stewardship of former Molo MP Njenga Mungai and former assistant minister Musa Sirma, the elders lauded Mr Odinga's commitment to ensure President Uhuru Kenyatta leaves a good legacy.
Mr Mungai said should Mr Odinga decide not to run in 2022, then it will be the greatest betrayal to supporters of President Uhuru Kenyatta from Rift Valley region.
“You have sacrificed a lot to save this country. You have remained focused on national values. We love you sir. Kindly do not forsake us by abandoning the race to State House. Stick with us. We are firmly with you,” he said.
“The politics of who should take over doesn't apply anymore. Give it to whoever has shown ability; Raila has proved himself. When the time comes we shall move and tell the people,” he said.
Mr Odinga dismissed Deputy President William Ruto, arguing that he is not an automatic heir of President Uhuru Kenyatta. He poked holes into Uhuru's deal with Ruto, saying it did not involve people.
“When they were agreeing with the President, the rest of Kenyans were not party to the deal and therefore he cannot impose his will on Kenyans,” Raila said.
“The presidential elections will be open to any Kenyans who qualify. No one should claim he is the one who must get it,” said Raila.
But Mr Odinga steered clear off the succession politics since he did not mention whether or not he will be on ballot. He said that 'I haven't declared that I will run just like Uhuru has not said he wants to stay on'.
Dr Ruto is struggling to stamp his authority in Rift Valley but the emergence of Gideon Moi seems to be displacing him. On Saturday, Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok said the region will back Dr Ruto.
