Croatia’s Football Federation (HNS) has sacked their national team’s assistant coach Ognjen Vukojevic. Vukojevic has been sacked over the video he posted after their victory over Russia in their World Cup quarter-finals match.
After the match, Vukojevic posted a “glory to Ukraine” video which was criticized by Russia politicians and even led to a warning from FIFA’s disciplinary committee.
“HNS hereby apologizes to the Russian public for the actions of a member of the Croatian delegation,” read part of an apology from Croatia’s Football Federation.
However, Vukojevic apologized for his video stating that it was not meant to be political.
FIFA has fined Vukojevic 15,000 Swiss francs ($15,000). The body also warned him of his unsporting behaviour even after he apologized for his actions.
Croatia will be facing England in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday. A match that many will be waiting for will take place in Russia’s capital city Moscow.
This has come at a wrong time even as the team needs every help to beat England. It should be remembered that Sweden were also disadvantaged when they faced England in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. They got woken up early with a fire alarm.
