This includes belief in the existence of witchcraft, which however remains a societal issue which cannot be prosecuted in court.

Here are the types of witchcrafts believed to exist in Luo Nyanza.

1. Eye witchcraft

This is the type of witchcraft where evil spirits are passed from the possessed person to the victim through the eye.

This type of witchcraft is associated with women and is passed to others, mostly children when eating or breastfeeding.

This type is called 'juog wang' (eye witchcraft) or 'sihoho' and is detected when tears begin falling from the woman's eyes.

The aftermath is the victim illness to the victim but if detected immediately, the remedy is to share the food with the witch.

This is called 'oso' (cleansing).

2. Possession

This is also considered witchcraft though it doesn't have any lethal effects on the society but is contained in the victim.

It is the situation where one becomes possessed and behaves differently from other members of the society because of the spirits believed to live inside them.

It can lead to mood swings or the tendency to remain alone, refuse to eat with people and also talk too much.

It is called 'juogi' in Luo.

3. Night running

This is called 'juok' or 'pitipiti' in Luo and entails the possessed party finding it uncomfortable to sleep at night and instead heads out to disturb others.

Its believed to run in the blood and can be passed from a family to the other.

However, in the instance that one manages to catch a night runner, its very much discouraged to injure him as his blood can pass the vice to your family.

Night runners are very rampant in most Nyanza villages though they are well-known villagers.
