A section of Mt Kenya leaders opposition Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 candidature has reportedly formed a caucus whose main assignment would be taming 'Tanga Tanga' movement.
For the last one year, a vibrant team dubbed Tanga Tanga movement has been crisscrossing the vast Mt Kenya region in a bid to popularise Ruto's candidature, a move that has angered the new team.
East Africa Legislative Assembly MP Maina Kamanda, who is leading the team, says he will mobilise his team to completely block Ruto's brigade from premature campaigns, which they insist are aimed at sabotaging President Uhuru Kenyatta's service delivery.
"We now have a group that the President can rely on as his directives on premature campaigns have fallen on deaf ears. Some of the MPs have been consumed by 2022 politics to the extent of insulting older politicians who have seen it all in politics.
"We shall go around the country reminding the people that President Kenyatta's term is not yet over and urging leaders to respect him and we shall be naming them," Mr Kamanda said.
Dubbed Mt Kenya and Diaspora Forum, the team has also recruited former Presidential aspirants Martha Karua and Peter Kenneth among another host of former leaders from the region.
Former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru is also said to be in the team.
Other leaders said to be in the team in Murang’a are MPs Peter Kimari (Mathioya), Ruth Mwaniki (Kigumo), Waithira Muithirania (former Woman Rep aspirant) and former Senator Kembi Gitura.
Those perceived to be members of Tanga Tanga squad in Murang’a are Senator Irungu Kang'ata, Woman Representative Wanjiru Chege and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, reports Daily Nation.
According to Mr Kamanda, a fierce critic of Ruto who spoke on Sunday at Murang'a, the Diaspora terminology refers to leaders who support President Uhuru Kenyatta's legacy from outside Mt Kenya.
In the recent weeks, Uhuru has warned against early campaigns, a move which the team insists is yet to be compiled to by the Ruto's brigade thus the decision to respond through the new team.
