Garissa Township lawmaker Aden Duale has revealed that only President Uhuru can save Kenyans from the punitive fuel VAT that has touched off a blowback.

Speaking Sunday, the outspoken MP said that the head of state has two options: To sign Parliament's bill seeking the suspension of the tax or to disagree with Parliament and allow the tax to take effect.

"The president has a number of options. He can suspend the VAT by signing the law. He can also disagree with parliament. Until the president is presented with this law, Kenyans have no choice but to pay the sixteen sentence," Duale said.

The House Majority Leader's remarks come in the wake of a huge public outcry over the tax.

President Uhuru is in China to attend a leaders' meeting.

KRA announced that the tax will take effect in spite of Parliament's intervention.

Matatu operators vowed to pass the cost to consumers.
