Police officers in Nyamira County have seized five tonnes of stolen fertiliser.

Confirming the incident on Friday, Nyamira police boss, Catherine Mugwe said members of the public tipped off police officers about a trader who was has been selling government-branded fertiliser at Miruka shopping centre. 

"Members of the public are doing a good job. Our officers were informed about the rogue trader's dealings. Officers stormed the trader's shop where five tonnes of government-branded fertiliser was confiscated," she said.  

The police boss further said 99 50kg bags of GoK-branded fertiliser were seized during the raid at the trader's shop.

According to Mugwe, traders who will steal government fertiliser meant to be issued to farmers will not be spared. 

"Police officers are ongoing investigating how the 5 tonnes of top-dressing fertilizer got into his shop," she stated. 

She noted that the trader claimed that he had bought the fertiliser to use on his farm. 

"Police asked the trader to present the documents on Monday 8 am showing that he bought the fertiliser failure to which he will be arraigned in court," she added.
