Police in Mtwapa, Kilifi County have launched investigations after they intercepted Sh6.6 million, fake Kenyan currency over the weekend.

The fake money was found in a house in Shanzu following a tip-off from members of the public.

According to Kilifi County Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng, a suspect believed to be the owner of house took off before the officers arrived.

He confirmed that chemicals used to process the fake Sh1,000 notes were seized in a vehicle that was parked outside the house.

“Officers conducted a search and found fake currency in the denomination of Sh1,000, which totalled to 6.67 million,” said the police commander, adding that the vehicle was in police custody as investigations continue.

He further thanked members of the public, saying they should be cautious since the fake money could already be in circulation around Mtwapa.
