The Tanzanian forces on Sunday November 4, arrested 36 fishermen and impounded their ten boats while they were reportedly fishing in the waters of Lake Victoria.

According to Citizen Digital, the neighboring nation is now demanding Sh1.3 million to free the fishermen, and another Sh200, 000 for each of the boats.

Confirming the arrests, Migori County Police Boss Joseph Nthenge called upon fishermen to observe the borders, adding that they are following up on the matter to establish why the group was nabbed.

The same has as well been condemned by Nyatike lawmaker Tom Odege who has called upon both the Kenyan government to secure the release of the fishermen.

Further, he has urged the East African Community to establish lasting solutions to the recurrent cases of water border rows between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania which share the fresh water body.

Failure to this, he added, the lake could result to the collapse of the good relationship the nations are currently having.

Kenya has as well been having similar issues with Uganda, a row that has been fueled by the disagreement over who exactly owns the Migingo Island within the lake.

Consequently, Kenyan fishermen have repeatedly lamented of harassment by Ugandan forces, including arrests and mistreatment when caught fishing around the rock.
