Several people sustained serious injuries on Monday after a group of machete-wielding youths started attacking people in Likoni, Mombasa.

The gang members went on rampage and attacked residents after burial of a gangster who was killed by police officers.

After the burial of 25-year-old Aballah Swaleh alias Vumbi at Migombani Cemetery, the gang which was went ballistic and descended on civilians before police quelled the situation.

Businesses shut down and learning was disrupted during the attack in Bomani, Migombani, Bahari, Nuru, Bofu Kiwerera and Mtaa wa Makka areas.

Among the schools that were affected and were forced to close early include Peleleza Primary, Dar-ul-Ulum Girls, Puma Primary and Puma Secondary.

Likoni Sub-County Police Commander Benjamin Rotich who confirmed the situation said they deployed police officers in the affected areas and managed to control the situation.

Some of the victims who were rushed to different hospitals in Likoni suffered deep cuts on the hands, heads and legs.

Rotich said they arrested four suspected gang members who will assist the police in their investigations as they seek to arrest more gang members.

“The four are in our custody. The operation is still on. We have calmed the situation already,” said Rotich.
