Former Presidential candidate James Ole Kiyiapi has reacted on the ongoing debate on new currencies.
In a tweet, Kiyiapi said that that the new notes do not need to include an image after the face of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was included on the same.
Kiyiapi said that the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) flaunted laws of currency change during the process.
He noted that Mt Kenya remains the most iconic landmark that should be used in the currency.
“The most ICONIC Kenyan landmark is Mt. Kenya - the snowcapped mountain on the equator NOT KICC. Or was it a convenient way of sneaking in the statue of the first President? We must follow the letter and spirit of the Constitution -no HUMAN IMAGE should be on new currencies!” he tweeted.
His remarks come after East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament (MP) Simon Mbugua filed a case against the CBK over the issuance of the new currency.
He argued that the move is unconstitutional and against the interest of the public. He faulted CBK for not involving the public in the unveiling of the new look of the notes.
"The directive is in violation of the constitution and the Central Bank Act," his petition read as quoted by Standard.
