North Eastern Kenya politicians have been urged to stop frustrating the new National Integrated Identification Management System (NIIMS) registration in the region.
Speaking on Sunday, Wajir Regional Commissioner Mohammed Ribik cautioned area politicians against making utterances likely to discourage Kenyans from registering.
The administrator was speaking in Habaswein, Wajir, where he accused the group of using baseless arguments, all in an apparent bid to stop the procedure.
"We have noted with concern regular utterances made by politicians on the ongoing NIIMS registration, its unfortunate because we don’t expect such from them, they should instead support the Government,” he was quoted by the Monday Standard.
He was most likely referring to Mandera and Garissa county bosses Ali Roba and Ali Korane, both of whom have raised serious questions regarding the new system.
But in their argument, the county chiefs have raised the issue of lack of documents among the people in the area, noting that about 90 percent of them lack the likes of ID documents which are needed for the exercise.
This comes as the registration enters its second week after President Uhuru Kenyatta launched it in Machakos county on Tuesday.
