Mombasa politics is slowly shaping up even as former 'sworn political enemies' closed ranks to give the 2022 battle a new dimension.
With Governor Hassan Joho and his worthwhile political rival Najib Balala pledging to work together ahead of the next election, the duo's deal may shape up the county's politics. However, the governor may be caught in some dilemma as far as his succession is concerned.
Though he has not openly indicated the seat he will be going for come the next general election, Balala has hinted his intention to re-enter politics after several years in the cold.
Considering his political stature where he is one of the senior-most politicians from the region, the Tourism CS may go for the Mombasa Governor position, a move that may spoil Joho's succession plan.
Recently, Mombasa-based lawyer and political analyst Yusuf Abubakar claimed that Joho could be nurturing County Assembly Speaker Kharub Kharti as his successor at the end of his tenure come 2022.
To avoid backlash from his newfound political allies, Joho may be forced to keep off Mombasa gubernatorial race come 2022.
