ODM party leader Raila Odinga, his allies and supporters have been on the forefront calling for constitutional reforms through a referendum.
According to Raila, the reforms will improve governance in the country by providing an efficient government.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has now joined those who are supporting the call for a referendum by saying that constitutional reforms in Kenya are necessary as the current presidential system has failed to resolve national leadership issues.
“The referendum should resolve the national leadership issues. We thought that the presidential system would resolve the issues of representation but this has not happened. That is why there is need for expansion of space at the top to make people feel represented,” Waiguru said.
Waiguru’s move has elicited mixed reactions as she has been perceived as Deputy President William Ruto’s ally since she clinched Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat in 2017.
Waiguru has been touted by several quarters as the right match to deputise Ruto in 2022.
On his part, Ruto and his allies have strongly opposed the call for a referendum terming it an effort for Raila and his group to benefit themselves after they failed to be elected to government.
Raila and Waiguru have been political rivals since the mega NYS scandal when she was the Devolution CS.
