Sonko's political storms started with the resignation of former deputy governor Polycarp Igathe.

Igathe resigned in January after serving only four months in office.

In May, Sonko found himself in political trouble when he nominated former Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Miguna Miguna as his deputy.

He received criticism from Jubilee Party leaders who demanded that he drops Miguna's nomination.

The Nairobi governor however defied the Jubilee Party orders on Miguna's nomination.

In June, the County Assembly rejected Miguna's nomination saying he was not fit to hold the position.
