Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has hit out at Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ambassador Amina Mohamed over alleged threat to arrest HELB defaulters.
Mulyungi says it’s shameful for the government to threaten defaulters with arrests.
Speaking when he toured Nuu Ward on Tuesday, Mulyungi asked the government to create jobs for university graduates instead of issuing 'meaningless' threats.
The Wiper Party legislator stated that being a defaulter is not a crime.
He said those defaulting neither have jobs nor income.
“The government must get serious and do things in the right manner, arresting defaulters will not help in recovery of funds,” Mulyungi said.
Mulyungi noted that majority of HELB beneficiaries are jobless.
Several Kenyans including leaders continue to criticize the CS for threatening to arrest HELB defaulters.
Amina was quoted saying that the government will go for HELB beneficiaries who have gainful employment but are not servicing their loans.
According to HELB, over 74,000 beneficiaries have defaulted on their loans.
The Loans Board says some of the defaulters have employment but have opted not to repay their loans.
