A video showing Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji firing his pistol in the air during a wedding has surfaced online.
The undated video shows the senator taking to the podium before he pulls the trigger.
Haji who has been vocal on matters affecting the Somali community is invited to the podium by the master of the ceremony before he decides to pull the surprise.
The legislator who is the father of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji, leaves some of the guests shocked while others are heard cheering him.
During the same event, Administration Police officers try to keep law and order as guests from different walks of life address the crowd.
It is believed that the shooting is a common thing among Somali events. The community borrowed the culture from the Arabs. It is considered as a symbol of status whereby those with guns are not only respected but also feared.
The bridegroom’s side often fires in the air while the bride responds with gunshots as well.
Somali weddings often go on until midnight.
The guests also carry guns as a way of defence during war times.
