Detectives from the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) are probing Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki's wife MM Mugweru over alleged involvement in corruption.
The later is facing allegations of inflating the price of an incinerator imported from China, and collaborating with the Governor to inflate its price to Sh34 million from Sh4 million.
They were on Tuesday separately grilled by the detectives at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi, over the machine supplied by the Chinese Generation Electronics and Allied Limited.
Detectives are now suspecting that the two preferred the company in the tender offer, after which it accompanied the machine and installed it in Chuka Town, the county's seat of power.
"When the machine was shipped into the country, the county government placed an advert in the local dailies with the exact specifications of the one imported. This gave this company an edge over other companies also bidding and it won the local tender,” an investigating officer disclosed.
Mrs Mugweru walked into Integrity Center moments after the exit of the county how's who was accompanied by his lawyer Katwa Kigen.
The grilling was confirmed by EACC Spokesman Yassin Amaro.“Governor Njuki has been interviewed and recorded a statement with investigators,” Amaro said.
