Each and every community has its own set of slangs which are meant to either hide vulgar words or leave outsiders in the dark.
At times, their are also coined to give a name to new things whose names are not in the vocabulary.
Here are some of the most popular slangs used in Luo Nyanza;
1. Peng'
This is the currently trending slang for motorbike boda bodas.
They are also referred to as 'apiko' in other places of Nyanza or even among Luos inhabiting cosmopolitan urban centers.
Bicycle boda bodas are called 'ngware'.
In real sense, it should be called by it's Swahili name 'pikipiki as there is no Luo word for the machines which were introduced after the full formation of the Luo vocabulary.
2. Jarabuon
This is the most polite nickname Luos have for their counterparts from Central Kenya and originates from the notion that members of the Kikuyu community are fond of potatoes.
Jarabuon, therefore, directly translates to the potato men, with a lady likely to be reffered to as 'Nyarabuon'.
Others will simply refer to them as 'Okuyu', with the 'O' existing at the beginning to give it the Luo touch.
3. Minyonge
This is the slang for money.Money too came with the colonialists, when the Luo vocabulary was fully formed and there is no Luo word for it.
The other slang word for money is 'Otonglo'.
