Kenyans and leaders continue to send messages of hope to Kibra MP Kenneth Okoth who is battling stage four colorectal cancer.
On Tuesday, Okoth shared his photo going through chemotherapy.
The photo captioned ‘Napambana na hali yangu kabisa (I am seriously struggling with my condition) chemo drugs brutal on my skin and immune system’ has seen Kenyans and leaders empathize with him.
Okoth is among few MPs who have publicly declared that they are battling cancer.
The Kibra Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP is among vocal opposition politicians in Nairobi.
Here is a look at how Okoth rose to political fame.
Born in 1978 and raised in Kibra's Kisumu Ndogo (little Kisumu) area, Okoth is the fifth born in a family of six.
He studied at Olympic primary school before proceeding to Starehe Boys Center.
The MP later got a scholarship to the United States where he studied a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations.
He also holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Georgetown University.
During his holiday periods when he traveled back home from overseas where he studied, Okoth worked as a 'watchman' at the Goethe Cultural Institute in Nairobi.
While studying at Starehe Boys Centre, Okoth worked as a receptionist at a local mission hospital and doubled up as a newspaper vendor during holidays before he got a scholarship to study abroad.
In the 2013 general election, the youthful politician ventured into politics and successfully contested for the Kibra parliamentary seat.
A close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga, Okoth easily defended the seat in the 2017 general election.
He is among vocal city politicians to watch in the coming 2022 general election.
The 41-year-old has sponsored a Bill in Parliament that seeks to legalise bhang on grounds that it has medical and economic value.
Apart from politics, Okoth is an entrepreneur and philanthropist.
He runs the Kibera Foundation where he sponsors bright but needy students.
