She is among the leaders who have risen from political families in Ukambani.

Mwendwa is the former Kitui Woman Representative.

The politician who has just turned 75, has accomplished many things in her political career.

She is the first woman in Kenyan history to serve as a Cabinet Minister. 

Mwenwa served as the Minister for Culture and Social Services during retired President Daniel Moi’s regime, a position that helped her a lot in sharpening her political career.

Before that, Winfred Mwendwa was the Member of Parliament for Kitui West Constituency, a position which she successfully contested and retained in 1972, 1992 and 2002 elections. 

She is the wife to the late Kitili Maluki Mwendwa, Kenya’s first Chief Justice who died in a grisly accident in 1985.

She is an alumni of Alliance High School.

Most people in her county trusted and elected her as their Woman Representative immediately devolution took effect in 2013.

She is still remembered by many for being part of a high powered delegation of Kenyan women that attended the famous women conference in Beijing in 1995.
