All proverbs in the Luo community are meant to educate, warn and caution.
However, some come out funny in terms of the word selection and combination.
Here are some of the funniest, especially when looked at in the Luo perspective.
1.Nyathi mioro ema chieth ne duong
This translates to ‘a kid who agrees to be sent defecates the biggest’.
This is indirectly aimed at encouraging children and the youthful generation to be obedient, and mostly to be helpful not only to their parents and the entire community.
It clearly states that he or she who lends a hand is the one who gets awarded and ends up achieving the most and attracting a lot of favors in gratitude.
2. Maberber ema imadhe kwesi
This one translates to ‘you don’t smoke your pot unless the issue is solvable’.
At a time when people smoked their pots during brainstorming sessions, this saying meant to demonstrate that there comes a time when the pot becomes unsmokable.
This is the time when almost every organ in the body comes to a halt as people engage their brains, especially during very dire situations.
3. Kik igori ne pier monga’m
(Do not fight over a freely offered thing)
It seeks to caution people against accepting readily offered things as one has to think twice when the deal seems too sweet.
