Religious groups have threatened to push for prosecution of legislators who attended the recently concluded World Cup in Russia.
In a statement, The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) and the Commission For Human Rights and Justice (CFHRJ) demanded that the lawmakers return the taxpayers fund that facilitated the trip.
Organizing Secretary Sheikh Mohamed Khalifa, CIPK demanded that the 20 legislators comply with the demand or face prosecution.
CFHRJ Executive DirectorJulius Ogogoh said the trip was uncalled for considering that many Kenyans are languishing in poverty.
"We want those MPs who went to Russia to return the money or we will sue them for misusing taxpayers money," Ogogoh warned.
According to the MPs, the trip was mainly used for benching marking purposes on how to host an international event. The trip resulted in outrage from Kenyans.
Homa Bay legislator Peter Kaluma had earlier defended the trip indicating that the taxpayers were justified to pay.
"Even if the government were not to pay for this trip I would pay it but the question is why should I pay while am here as a Member of Parliament from Kenya. Here people are asking why we did not use the economy class flight but why should you do that when you are representing the government?" Kaluma posed.
14 members of the National Assembly and six Senators went to Russia. They included Siaya Senator James Orengo, Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga, Cleophas Malala(Kakamega) and Aaron Cheruyiot (Kericho).
