President Uhuru Kenyatta will not attend the burial of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Accra, Ghana.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Uhuru has instead nominated National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as his special envoy at the funeral which will take place on September 13, 2018.
Muturi will be accompanied by a delegation of senior officials from the national government, judiciary and legislature.
An official representative from the High Commission of the Republic of Kenya in Abuja, Nigeria, will also attend the burial of the former top diplomat.
Annan passed on while receiving treatment in Bern, Switzerland on Saturday, August 18.
He is better remembered for his role in brokering a peace deal between retired President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga after the bloody 2007 general election.
When the ex-UN boss died, President Uhuru was among the tens of Head of States who sent their condolences.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to them as they come to terms with this sad news. We pray that the Almighty God will grant his family, relatives and friends the strength and grace to bear the loss," he eulogised.
Annan's family has requested those wishing to attend the burial not to bring along flowers.
"The family has kindly asked that no flowers be sent. For those still wishing to have their thoughts and support reflected in a gift, they suggest a contribution to the Kofi Annan Foundation,” the statement added.
