Several houses belonging to suspected witches were torched by angry villagers in Borabu constituency on Wednesday even as a book indicating committee members was recovered.
At Chinunda village, a coffin believed to be that of a young girl buried on Tuesday, at least 13 kilometers from the scene, was also recovered and positively identified.
"We buried my granddaughter after she died mysteriously. We used this coffin. There was something suspicious at the grave. Seems they took her body," Mochumbe Moronya, the grandfather to the deceased said.
Not far from the empty casket, a book indicating the names of the suspected witches was recovered, prompting villagers to descend on the culprits.
George Nyangena, a witness, said at least three houses had been set on fire with police hesitant to intervene as suspected witches took off from the village.
"The book indicates names of those perpetuating this and those who are likely to die. Three houses had been burnt and several others may go down," he said.
By the time of going on air, County Commissioner Amos Mariba declined to comment of the issue, but assured residents he will issue comprehensive statement, Thursday.
Cases of witchcraft in Gusii region are not anonymous given that a number of people were burnt in 2011 at Marani sub county in relation to sorcery.
