Mr Moi, who is also eyeing 2022 presidential elections, had visited the area to condole with Kasarani MP Mercy Gakuya who lost her father, Washington Mwangi.

On her official Twitter account, KANU party labelled Moi's actions as 'humility' even as sections of Kenyans trolled him on social media.

"Senator Gideon Moi on his way to the burial of Kasarani MP Mercy Gakuya's Father Mzee Washington Kamaku Mwangi in Kiharu, Muranga County. Humility is a virtue."https://twitter.com/KANUParty_ke/status/1066316185367732224?s=19.

At the site, curious onlookers took photos with some cheering the younger Moi as he waved enthusiastically back.

But his critics described the move as desperate, adding that it would not turn around his fortunes ahead of 2020 polls.

"Just try to be calm. Don't hide in what you're not. Hiding in PR stunts is the worst political strategy I have seen in the recent past," wrote Gideon Nyamboki.

DP William Ruto, another presidential aspirant, is synonymous with taking food in roadside kiosks and buying roasted maize in markets, a move that has equally out him at loggerheads with his critics.
