Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang' Nyong'o has landed a new post in the education industry which he may use to uplift education standards in the lakeside county.
The former Kisumu Rural MP and a close friend to opposition leader Raila Odinga was on Wednesday appointed Chancellor of the Great Lakes University of Kisumu.
A brief statement released by his communications team and shared on social media said the appointment takes effect immediately as he replaces the late David Wasao.
The appointment, the statement said, was arrived at "after months of deliberations by the council."
"The decision was made by the University board of trustees chaired by Francis Mwai Abiero," it said.
Nyong'o is an academician, and is on record as being the first Kenyan student to score a First Class Honour Degree at the Faculty of Social Sciences at East Africa's oldest institution of higher learning, Makerere University.
He studied Political Science at undergraduate level.
Because of his outstanding performance, Makerere University still honours him to date. Every year, the institution invites him for a public lecture where he gives a keynote address.
He has lectured at the University of Nairobi, as well as, universities in Mexico and Ethiopia. He was once the head of programs at the American Academy of Sciences.
Great Lakes University of Kisumu where he is now Chancellor was started in 1998.
