After several weeks of muscle flexing between Mombasa Country Governor Hassan Joho and a section of Members of the County Assembly, the MCAs finally sealed the fate of Infrastructure Executive Committee Member, Tawfiq Balala, a close Joho ally.
The ODM deputy party leader unsuccessfully tried to save his cabinet member by threatening to dissolve his government but the defiant MCAs stood their ground. And last Wednesday, Balala was finally impeached amid incompetence accusations.
So, in the aftermath of the impeachment, is the high-flying Joho finally losing ground in Mombasa politics after over 6 years at the top of the game?
The fact that the once-loyal MCAs defied the Governor is perhaps a tell-tale sign that all is not well in Joho’s political life especially considering that the defiance came from his own home turf.
So, what next for Joho, who has set his eyes on the country’s top seat come the 2022 election?. Is the loss of his favorite minister a sign of bad things to come?
Whatever happens, the flamboyant Governor may be forced to go back to the drawing board strategizing on how to upset the status quo.
