As he embarks on his ambitious political odyssey- that of succeeding President Uhuru Kenya during the next general election, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho is aware that the task ahead is no walk in the part, considering the caliber of politicians he is most likely going to face.
Deputy President William Ruto is so far seen as the leading contender in the Uhuru succession race.
Boasting a huge political war chest, the DP may have a smooth ride to State House. But the equally politically strong Joho has his own strengths that may complicate Ruto's journey to political greatness.
Since plunging into the murky world of politics as a young man in 2004 to contest the Kisauni MP seat during a by-election, Joho's biggest political virtue has been his loyalty to the people who made him.
There is no doubt that Joho is Raila's political son. And despite his own political success, the Mombasa Governor has remained loyal to his party boss and mentor.
At a time when the Coast region has staged a rebellion against Raila, Joho has remained with Raila at his hour of need.
And with the former Premier's next political move remaining shrouded in mystery, who knows, maybe Raila will reward his loyalty by backing his presidential bid.
Should Raila make such a move, Ruto's political game plan would have been dealt a blow.
