The family of Don Bosco Gichana, the Kenyan businessman who was sentenced in Tanzania, is on the verge of raising Sh13 million to secure his freedom from Arusha prison, it has been established.
Last week, Bosco was sentenced to five years on top of the fine but he will not serve the sentence since he'd already spent same duration in remand.
And blogger Olivia Moraira says the family is almost reaching the target and Gichana could be in the country as early as from this coming week.
"Friends and family have been contributing. I think we are almost reaching the target," she said.
Mr. Don Bosco Gichana pleaded guilty to money laundering and fraud charges in Arusha court before getting the sentence.
ODM leader Raila Odinga, who has been lobbying for his release, is said to have directly contributed to the ongoing fundraiser.
A source from Capitol Hill says Mr. Odinga gave a personal donation of Sh3 million to help his former financier secure freedom.
"He asked for the court judgment and has since contributed to the ongoing fundraiser by friends. I am reliably informed that he donated Sh3 million," said the source who spoke in confidence.
Mr. Odinga met Tanzania President John Magufuli in August where Don Bosco's release was widely discussed.
