The number of witchdoctors has been on the rise in Eldoret town, the capital of Uasin Gishu county.
This has however raised an alarm among locals as it's emerging that some of those who present themselves as witchdoctors are actually conmen and women.
The witchdoctors some who claim to be foreseers advertise themselves through posters indicating their mobile numbers below the listed number of ailments to treat, including enabling one to land a higher paying job.
Wilson Otieno, a local in the area revealed how he was conned of his money by one of the ‘fortune tellers’. He had sought help from them so as to identify robbers who broke into his small shop in Langas estate.
“I contacted the number I took from one of the posters, the recipient of the call was unexpectedly a woman who referred me to another man who identified himself as John,” Otieno said.
The supposed fortune teller demanded Sh5,000 before he could be helped which he complied to meet the prerequisites.
Interestingly, after sending the money, his calls to the number never went through as he had been blocked.
Mathew Bett, another local noted that most of the so-called doctors are from the Eastern part of the country as well as neighbouring countries including Tanzania and Uganda.
“Most of the posters patched on the electricity poles describe themselves as from either Ukamabani or outside the country,” Bet said stating that residents should be aware of robbers since they have invented new ways of soliciting money from naïve men and women.
