The deceased, James Onduko passed on a week ago.

Locals said he had married Catherine Mong’ina as the first wife while Zipporah Nyanchama was the second wife.

Both wives wanted the corpse to spend a night at their respective houses which brewed a bitter exchange of words before a fight ensued.

“Onduko has been living happily with his two wives until he died last week. We planned for his burial and picked his body on Tuesday for burial today, Wednesday. Nyanchama wanted the body to stay at her house overnight the proposal Mong’ina rejected saying she is the first wife and the body should stay for overnight at her house,” said Edward Nyareso.

Nyareso said Nyanchama was angered after elders said the body will not be taken to her house.

“Nyanchama started beating Mong’ina accusing her of bribing elders to side with her. The two fought as the public watched while the body was yet to be removed from the vehicle,” he noted.

Andrew Ogwora, an elder said the deceased according to the Gusii customs and culture, should be buried at the first wife’s homestead.

“Our culture doesn’t allow a man married to 2 wives to have his body taken to the second wife's house after his death. We must follow the culture strictly to avoid curses and calamities,” he said.

Area chief, Leonard Mbaye condemned the incident saying Nyanchama, the second wife was being incited by her friends who lied to her that she will not get a portion of land if the dead husband will not be buried at her homestead.

“Nyanchama was misled that she can’t be a beneficiary of her husband’s property. She is the second give to the deceased and the deceased property will be shared equally among them,” he said.

Mbaye said the burial will go on as planned today, Wednesday.
