Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has differed with Deputy President William Ruto over the proposal to strengthen the Senate.
The National Assembly Majority Leader says there is no way the Senate can be superior to the National Assembly.
Speaking during a meeting with Muslim leaders at a Nairobi hotel on Wednesday, Duale said that framers of the 2010 constitution did not contemplate a powerful and superior Senate that can control the National Assembly.
According to Duale, any push to make the Senate superior will be vehemently rejected.
“We cannot have a Senate that is superior to the National Assembly, that will not work, and we will oppose it,” he said.
The MP asked those pushing to make the Senate superior to subject it to a referendum.
He said that the Senate has allegedly failed to defend and protect devolution.
Early this month while giving a lecture at Chatham House, DP Ruto proposed for the Senate to be given extra roles.
He said the Senate should be distinguished from the National Assembly.
The Deputy President further proposed for the elevation of the Senate to an Upper House as the case is in the United States.
A section of senators is pushing to make the Senate superior on the grounds they perform important duties.
The debate on whether to make the Senate superior is likely to take centre stage moving forward as the debate on referendum continues to rage on.
