The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town has successfully conducted seven Open Heart surgeries.
Hospitals' Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Wilson Aruasa says the surgeries were performed by surgeons at the facility together with those from Moi University College of Health Sciences and the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The Cardiac Surgeons performed the surgeries last week, effectively placing MTRH among Open Heart surgery centres like KNH, Mater, Tenwek and Karen hospitals.
"6 of the patients underwent double valve replacement and one patient single valve replacement. All the patients are faring on well post-operatively and are in a stable position. This is the first open heart surgery to be conducted outside Nairobi,” said Dr Aruasa, Sunday.
He further revealed that the hospital which is the second largest public health facility in the country has sourced for a Heart-Lung machine and its consumables from Medtronic’s PLC (United States) that will help to deal with heart-related cases.
"We want to make these surgeries regular as we also work on cardiac catheterization surgeries among other speciality surgeries. We want more patients from the region to benefit rather than travelling to Nairobi,” added Dr Aruasa.
