Garissa County is set to shape President Uhuru Kenyatta's energy legacy as his second and final term unfolds apace.
A 54.6 Megawatt power plant, which will be the largest in East and Central Africa will be established in the vicinity of the county's town, about 15 kilometres.
It will be launched by the president himself, a testament to how important it is to his presidential legacy.
The plant will help in significantly reducing the high cost of power that Kenyans continue to bear.
Cheap electricity is coming in from the renewables; the Turkana wind (power) is here with us and Garissa solar will be coming in November. It will leverage on the cost of electricity because when you have cheap generation it means the cost of power also comes down," the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) boss Mr Oimeke revealed.
Other than reducing the cost of power, the project is expected to change the economic fortunes of North Eastern Kenya through employment creation, investments and improved infrastructure.
