A sombre mood has engulfed students and teachers of Kisumu Girls' High School after one student died on Friday morning.
The Form Two student died shortly after being taken to the Kisumu County Hospital, a few metres from the school.
According to Nyanza police boss Vincent Makokha, the student was suffering from malaria. He said that she came to school while sick when schools reopened for the second term towards the end of last month.
“We spoke to the school’s Principal and she told us that the student came back to school while sick. She was on malaria dose unfortunately, she had forgotten her drugs at home. She went to the matron and told her of her condition. The matron put her on medication,” Makokha told journalists.
The police boss said that on Friday morning, the student did not go for breakfast after the morning preps.
“Her colleagues informed the matron that she was not feeling well. The matron then informed the deputy principal. They then decided to take her to the hospital. That is when the student died,” he added.
Makokha said that further statements concerning the death of the student will be released to the public by parents and Kisumu Girls' High School Principal.
