Meru Senator Mithika Linturi has said the Mt Kenya region should not renege on its said political pact with the Rift Valley region come 2022.
Linturi said the region should keep its promise and support Deputy President William Ruto.
People Daily quoted the senator asking the region’s residents to take into account that other communities have trusted, and supported candidates from the Mt Kenya region, and should also do so to other candidates.
“We don’t want to contradict the position we took in 2013. As the people of Mt Kenya region, we don’t have to be deceitful. We want to be given back the party so that we feel that we too, own it. A party doesn’t belong to an individual,” said Linturi.
In 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly asked their supporters that they support him for 10 years and then hands over the baton to Ruto for another ten years.
This was widely interpreted as a political pact between the Mt Kenya and the Rift Valley regions.
Uhuru has enjoyed the support of the Rift Valley since 2013.
However, after he won a second term, things seemed to change, and there have been talks that he is no longer at peace with his deputy.
His Jubilee party has also been plunged into crisis as two factions emerge.
One is animatedly backing Ruto while the other is hell-bent on making sure his 2022 ambition is thrown to the dustbin.
