According to Eldoret West OCPD Zachariah Bitok, the four have been conning farmers that they have orders to supply maize to the United Nations.

They are buying the maize at Sh3,000 per 90-kilogram bag and promise to pay within a week.

Among the arrested is Kairo Nginya Sammy who is the main culprit and claims to be a former General Service Unit (GSU) officer.

He had a UN work permit which the police suspect is fake.

“This morning we have been able to arrest the main culprit who alleges to be working for the United Nations and as you can see this is his alleged culprit work permit. We have the culprits and they are assisting us with investigations,” said Bitok.

“On this case, we are investigating a haul of about 700 bags or more which are in the hands of conmen. What we are keen about is to recover the maize,” added the OCPD  who was speaking to the press in his Eldoret office, Wednesday.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court facing several charges among them obtaining goods by false pretence.

The police boss further said that farmers in the area are desperate to sell their produce hence becoming easy to fall prey for the conmen.

He, however, advised the farmers to be keen and scrutinize anybody that offers to buy their produce.
