The Kikuyu name their newborns depending on several factors such as where the kid is born, the season and also after family members; both dead and alive.

In the Kikuyu tradition, newborns are also named after their grandparents. For instance, first-born daughters are named after their grandmother from the father's side while the second daughter is given the name of her maternal grandmother. The same applies to boys.

Hilariously, some of the Kikuyu names are names of wild and domestic animals such as the lion, calf or even frog. 

Here is a list of some of the most common Kikuyu names and what they really mean;

1. Njoki -This is a female name that means “coming back”. If for instance, a mother died while giving birth to a daughter, the next baby girl to be born would be called Njoki.

2. Muchoki – This is the male equivalent of Njoki.

3 Wanjohi –The name means one who drinks beer. It is given not because the baby might be a drunkard but because the baby is named after a family member who is a drunkard.

4. Wacira – One who settles disputes. Maybe a lawyer, a mediator etc. 

5. Mumbi – A female name which means potter.

6. Nyambura – Born during the rainy season.

7. Njau – male name meaning, calf.

8. Ngari – The name, which means leopard, is given to newborns because they are thought to be harsh in future.

9. Muruthi -  The name is mostly given to fearless personalities, as it means lion. 

10. Mutongu – A rich person.

11. Muthoni – This is the name given to females who are named after the in-laws. 

12. Mwangi – Male name meaning, one who is always wandering.

13. Kiura –A male name meaning frog.

14. Wanjira – Born by the roadside.

15. Macharia – One who is always searching.

16. Muriithi – Shepherd.

17. Wang’ombe – One who owns many cows. The name is common among families living on the borders of Maasai and Kikuyu land. 

18. Waceke – The slim one.

19. Nyaguthii – One who is always travelling.

20. Wamucii – Always stays at home.

21. Wacera – Always visiting places and people.

22. Murugi – The cook.
