This is where hairdressers and beauticians come in. Additionally, the campus ladies prefer the cheapest salon with the best hairdressers.
Meet Millicent Anyango, popularly known as Millie, the hairdresser at the University of Eldoret students’ centre whose experience in hairdressing is praised by many students.
Millie decided to start hairdressing business after being tired of staying at home doing nothing.
She never went to a beauty college but it took her a month to learn it from a salon after which, she used to practice using grass.
Later on she started working for free for a period of one year. She was then employed to work in a salon which, unfortunately, got burnt during the 2007 post-election violence.
As a comeback, she decided to start her own salon, which did not let her down.
“I used to go to a salon to observe and later started practising on grass for a month then worked for free in a certain salon for one year. I landed the business after the salon I used to work in was burnt during the 2007 post-election violence. I had worked in the salon for two years,” said Millie.
Through her business, Millie is able to make more than Sh45,000 a month, minus expenses.
She charges Sh300 per head. The charges always rise during graduations when the graduands need to do weaves for the ceremony.
Through her salon business, Millie says she always gets daily experiences when her customers come with a new style from Google. This has also enabled her to do both local and international trendy looks.
She is always motivated by her responsibility to provide better education to her children. However, one of the challenges is lack of customers when the students are on a long holiday and the first weeks when they resume their session.
