Ayacko was on Friday handpicked for the post by the Orange party's National Elections Board after beating seven other hopefuls.

The party attributed the decision to financial shortages, noting that it was not well equipped financially to hold the primaries to settle of the candidate.

It added that the same was the case with time, with the national poll body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) having set October 8 as the date for the by-election.

"Aspirants who showed interest in the seat were invited to Nairobi yesterday and had a meeting with the Central Committee together with the NEB and were taken through the process of nomination. They all agreed to the decision on direct nomination," the party said in a statement as was seen by the Standard.

The seat fell vacant after the death of Senator Ben Oluoch Okello who succumbed to cancer last month.
