Former Gem Member of Parliament Jakoyo Modiwo has attracted the nation’s attention to a brand new sugar scandal just waiting to happen.
Speaking on NTV’s AM Live on Tuesday, the immediate former National Assembly Deputy Minority Whip claimed that a new ship is waiting to dock at the port of Mombasa with contraband sugar import.
The cargo ship, he said, is named MV Iron Lady and is set to further complicate the ongoing sugar saga originating from the 2017 mass import.
‘’As we are speaking, a ship named MV Iron Lady is waiting to dock at the port of Mombasa with more sugar,’’ revealed the former legislator who doubles up as opposition leader Raila Odinga’s cousin.
He further blamed the sugar barons implicated in the initial scandal of the new one, terming it part of the plan to flood the nation with cheap sugar.
‘’The shipment is part of the ongoing sugar controversy,’’ added Midiwo.
This comes at a time when daggers have been drawn in the National Assembly, following Thursday’s controversial rejection of the report of the committee probing the initial saga.
The importers have largely been accused of using underhand methods to crush the report by the Kieni parliamentarian Kanini Kega-led joint committee, with some lawmakers raising bribery allegations.
The accusers have claimed that lawmakers were bribed with as low as 10,000 shillings to reject the report.
