A senator has proposed that Kenya holds a referendum in which Kenyans should vote on whether to scrap off constituencies or not.
Cleophas Malala (Kakamega, ANC) on Thursday said there is no reason for Kenyans to continue footing money to pay the over 300 Members of Parliament to do work which the 47 senators can effectively do.
"My urge has resurrected to amend the Constitution to abolish constituencies because we are over-represented," Malala said while making deliberations at the Senate.
"If you have elected 47 senators to represent counties, which constituencies clustered together are counties. So if you have elected Cleophas Malala to represent the county of Kakamega, what other business do you have to elect 12 other people (MPs) to represent Kakamega county?"
"We shall be moving an amendment to the Constitution to abolish constituencies so that we only have senators to represent their counties and forget about constituencies."
There has been debate especially after the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution on the significance of having both the National Assembly and the Senate.
Kenya presently has 390 MPs plus 47 elected Senators besides the nominated ones.
Opposition chief Raila Odinga is pushing for a referendum and Malala could use the same opportunity to push for his proposed amendment.
