Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has urged National Government Administrators to sustain the 'Nyumba Kumi' (know your neighbour) initiative to encourage members of the public to share information on security matters with the authorities in real time to deter and tackle various crimes and terrorism.
The Cabinet Secretary made the remarks during a premier joint meeting of police commanders in both the National Government Administration and the National Police Service at a Mombasa hotel.
Accompanied by Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru, the security meeting comprised of the newly appointed Regional and County Commanders and the National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs).
Matiang’i said it is the policy of government to behave and transact as a civilized community.
He said the Ministry has no policy of harassing, mistreating or being uncooperative with the media but is rather bound by the law at all times to support the work being done by the media in the country especially when reporting crucial cases involving the police and criminal elements.
"No one who works in the media industry in Kenya should feel unsafe or should have any problem working anywhere in the country. We are going to operate as a modern, civilised government which relates with the press responsibly/respects the freedom of others."
Speaking on Monday, Matiang'i asked the police to support the media in Kenya and ensure freedom of the press.
"It is also important that those in media know that we are available to work with/support them," he said.
"You can agree with me that when duty called during the Dusit attack, we answered and we answered effectively. We are so proud of our police officers We are alert and we remain alert 24/7 to serve our people and ensure that our country remains secure/safe."
