Idriss had been hospitalised at Nairobi Hospital’s Intensive Care unit with a bullet lodged in his head after he was shot on August 19.

The family of Idriss last year in October airlifted him to India for specialized treatment after he was shot in the head but the doctors said that removing the bullet could turn fatal.

The family brought him back to Kenya on January 21 and they have been taking care of him at home after they were advised by the medics in India that home-based care would be the best option for his health.

According to the family, they had to take care of Idriss at home due to high charges at the hospital and the family has spent most of their savings seeking treatment.

Idriss’s father Aden Mukhtar had to quit his job as a teacher to take care of his eldest son and the family has spent about Sh8 million on transport alone besides medical fees.

Speaking to standardmedia.co.ke, Aden said they have converted one of his rooms into an intensive care unit.

“We have employed two nurses. One during the day and one at night, a neurosurgeon and a physiotherapist,” said Aden as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.

The family had said that the room is complete with an adjustable bed, a suction machine, and heart rate and blood pressure monitors, among other devices.

The former Garissa CEC was shot in the head and left for dead outside a hotel in Kileleshwa, Nairobi last year.
