Makau was first elected in the 2013 general election on Wiper Party ticket.

In the August 8, 2017 general election he won re-election in the hotly contested poll.

Makau is a close ally of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and is also among vocal Kamba politicians.

Before joining active politics, Makau was a banker.

The Wiper MP says that he quit banking to help Mavoko residents get services.

According to Makau, he was persuaded by the probems Mavoko locals were facing especially insecurity, lack of water and low education standards to join politics.

"I wanted to make a difference in terms of service delivery to the Mavoko people and that is how I quit my job as a banker to join politics," the Wiper MP says.

Makau ventured into active politics in 2002 when he was elected as Athi-River Councillor.

In 2008, he was elected Mavoko Mayor, a position he held to 2011.

In 2013, he was elected Mavoko MP on Wiper Party ticket.

Political analysts observe that Makau is among top politicians to shape Ukambani 2022 succession politics.

There are claims that the Wiper MP could contest for the Machakos Governor seat in 2022.
