He’s been on the limelight too much lately, and not for reasons that could inspire man a supporter.
Ardent supporters, however, will be quick to counter that Deputy President William Ruto is now a force to reckon with, so much that for newspapers to sell, they must put his name in the headline.
The path to state house is not paved with red roses, neither is it red-carpeted. There are huge boulders put in the place by DP Ruto’s detractors, and he must show his mettle, to remove them and make his march, undaunted, to the house on the hill.
On the other hand, the boulders planted in DP Ruto’s path may leave his supporters battle weary. As the legendary military strategist Sun Tzu said: "if victory is long in coming, your men’s weapons are bound to grow dull and their ardour dampened".
Despite DP Ruto’s numerous attempts to downplay his presidential ambitions, it does not take a special mind to discern the fact that no one wants to occupy the top seat more than him. Why? His trusted lieutenants are often quick to point out, although subtly, that he is being targeted or that a ‘certain’ community is being targeted.
The election period is still so far off and no one knows what politics has in store for everyone. For DP Ruto, persistent attacks here and there are bound to make his supporters battle weary. So far, he is the only known candidate for the presidency, and as such, he is fighting a faceless opponent.
In many supporters mind, the question is what is in store for DP Ruto? What are his opponents planning? What will unravel next to derail his ambition? Persistent attacks will leave him and his backbone, supporters, weak and exposed. And as Sun Tzu said, "no man, however wise is, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue".
