Transport along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru highway was paralysed in the better part of Tuesday after tens of Moi University School of Law students staged a demonstration over missing marks.
The over 300 fourth year students who are expecting to graduate in December accused the university management of denying them marks despite sitting for all examinations.
Speaking to the press during the protest, the student's led by their leader Calvin Wachira expressed their disappointment noting that they had raised the issue of missing marks long ago but the management had not addressed them.
“We sat for exams, we were given transcripts indicating that we have completed our course and the marks but we are now shocked that we will not graduate because of missing marks. This is not fair at all,” Wachira told the press.
The students also complained over delays in clearing students who are supposed to graduate in a graduation scheduled for December 2019.
“We have written letters, we have been cordial, we have held meetings and tried to seek an audience with the administration on all these issues but in vain,” added Wachira.
Police had to fire teargas canisters at the rowdy students in an attempt to calm the situation and allow normal transport to resume.
The students, however, accused the police of use of excessive force.
“Why are the police firing live bullets at comrades yet we are exercising our democratic rights to demonstrate? We want the administration to come out and address our concerns," said a student who was part of those protesting.
Efforts to get a comment from the institutions' management over the issues raised by the students were futile as they declined to speak to the press.
