The family of Mohamud Hussein Aden who is being held by detectives over his alleged role in the attempted murder of former Garissa Finance Executive Idriss Mukhtar has accused police of holding the wrong person.
The family told journalists at the Milimani Law courts on Thursday that Aden had no role in Mukhtar’s attempted murder and police are allegedly holding him up as a cover up.
According to the suspect brother who sought anonymity, Aden is a scapegoat in the case.
“The detectives are holding a wrong person and we want the court to intervene and have him released,” he said.
He claimed that they have been denied access to their brother who is being held by detectives at the Gigiri police station.
According to police investigators, Aden along with another suspect identified as Njoki allegedly played a key role in planning for Mukhtar’s attempted execution.
“The evidence we are combing through is crucial and implicates the two plus others,” a detective who sought anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said.
On Tuesday, Aden accused the detectives of torturing him by squeezing his genitals.
He pleaded with the court to grant him permission to seek medical attention.
The court ordered for him to be checked and treated at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) as investigations into his role in the attempted murder continues.
A key suspect, David Mwai who confessed to having been sent to eliminate Mukhtar and city lawyer Charles Kanjama died at Parklands police station last week.
Mwai allegedly committed suicide.
A postmortem examination released by the government pathologist on Wednesday confirmed that he died of hanging.
Investigations into the attempted murder has intensified with Garissa Governor Ali Korane among suspects who have been quizzed.
Korane has since denied having a hand in Mukhtar’s attempted murder.
